Territories, Identities and Socio-Political Actors in Nigeria

Forms and Roots of the Yoruba Political Space

Coordinators: J-L Martineau & Clément Boutillier
This approach of contemporary political systems in their relationship to the Federal construction consists of the following:

- the apprehension of the construction of the Yoruba regional identity since the 1940s, and the rooting of autochtony at lower levels through the link between school and citizenship from the 1950s to the beginning of the 1990s. Emphasis will be placed on the evaluation of school policies and their role in the formation of citizenship in the Nigerian Yoruba space since the launching of the Free Primary Education Scheme in the 1950s. (Jean-Luc Martineau).

- a comparison of Nigerian Youth movements to developments in the Young Patriots movement in Côte d’Ivoire and to youth movements supporting Jacob Zuma in South Africa will help analyze forms of governmentality and autochtony as exampled in the People Oodua People’ s Congress (Clément Boutillier).

- the study of the Action Congress in the Yoruba Southwest and its branches elsewhere in Nigeria provides an emblematic example the operation of the Nigerian political parties, on local as well as federal issues, and of the forms that political militancy take during the Fourth Republic (Guillaume Thiery)
