Project overview

This project will digitize the rich archival materials kept in the Ogunsheye Foundation, located in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria. Together Nigerian co-founders Professor Felicia Adetowun Ogunsheye (née Banjo) and late Professor Ayodele Ogunsheye, established the foundation in the 1990s. This project will focus on two distinct collections in the archive: the personal papers of Professor F. A. Ogunsheye, activist for women’s rights in different women’s movements, educationist and first female Professor in Nigeria and those of her late husband Professor Ayodele Ogunsheye, labor union activist, educationist for adult education, professor of Economics and businessman.

The project received the Modern Endangered Archives grant from the University of California (UCLA) Library.

The Ogunsheye Foundation

The Ogunsheye Foundation is an educational foundation established to commemorate the work of Professor Ayodele Ogunsheye and Professor Felicia Adetowun Ogunsheye. It holds two distinct collections.

First, the papers of Professor Felicia Ogunsheye, a women’s rights activist and educationist, who was both a teacher of geography and a Professor of Library Studies at the University of Ibadan, making her the first female professor in Nigeria.

Second, the records of Professor Ayodele Ogunsheye, both regarding his activities as a businessman and an educationist. He was, among others, Professor of Adult Education (1965-1970) and Dean of Faculty of Education at the University of Ibadan.
