Digitization Training Programme 25-29 October

202110ArchivesTrainingGroupAs part of the NaijaArchives project, which aims at improving the accessibility of Nigerian archives, and thanks to the funding of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Camille Tatger, a historian and archivist currently working for the French Ministry of Ecology came to provide a digitization training to staff members of various Nigerian Archives centres (Zaria, Kaduna, Enugu, Ibadan). The training took place from October 25th to October 29th in IFRA, University of Ibadan.

The general objective of the training was to enhance digitization projects in Nigerian Archives. The staff members from National Archives and private Archives collection should then be able to implement the methodology proposed by Dr Camille tatger in their own archives and start a digitization process.

This training was a theoretical and practical training. The recommendations given by Dr Camille Tatger  were immediately implemented to start the digitization of the private archive of Comrade Ola Oni. He was a prominent marxist activist and economist from the University of Ibadan. His archives document the left political movement in Nigeria as well as the history of Trade Union and Women Union from the 1960s to the 1990s in South-West Nigeria (Ibadan).

The archives were in a quite bad shape and scattered, so the full team of trainees under the supervision of Dr Camille Tatger, started by sorting out the collection, then cleaned the paper and started the digitization. In one week the team could achieve impressive work and the digitized collection will be soon available online.

The diffrent steps towards digitization in pictures. First, the team had to specify the needs (the reasons why the digitization of the collection was required) and to analyse the collection. Then, they sorted the collection out according to the French archival method. Finally, they cleaned the documents before to start the digitization. The last step is to classify the digitzed documents in the database according to the metadata (no picture for this step).
