Visit of Jennifer Lorin to IFRA-Nigeria
Jennifer Lorin (Uppsala University, Sweden) visited IFRA-Nigeria between July and August 2024 thanks to an Islamology grant. The French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the UMIFRE network (of which IFRA-Nigeria is part) support young researchers in the field of Islamology by offering field grants to doctoral students and young PhDs pursuing research in this field.
Jennifer Lorin is an anthropologist exploring how religions, particularly Islam, influence the royalties based on the isésé religion in Nigeria. This fieldwork in Nigeria gave Jennifer Lorin opportunity to explore a new field, attend the new Olubadan’s coronation in the city of Ibadan and to explore the neighbouring royalty in Osogbo where she also met religious leaders, i.e. the Araba and the priestess of Osun. The Osun shrine is linked to the grove, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring works by Susan Wenger, which marks the spot where the king passes for his enthronement.
