Exhibition "Beyond the classical: unveiling the unsung" at the National Museum of Lagos

Poster Beyond the classicalThe National Museum of Lagos Onikan and IFRA-Nigeria, as part of their partnership through the Nigerian Alternative Heritages project, organized the exhibition "Beyond the classical: unveiling the unsung", which aims at highlighting underrepresented objects of Nigeria's diverse heritages. This project is funded by the French Embassy Fund.

 

You can attend the exhibition, free of charge, until 16 May at the National Museum Lagos.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The day began with a roundtable and discussion between the organizers and the press. Mrs Nkechi Adedeji (curator of the Museum), Barbara Morovich (IFRA-Nigeria director), Mr Joseph Ayodokun (FEF project coordinator), Mrs Sharon Nworgu, Mr Busari Tunji, Mr Aina Abdulkabir, Mrs Ayeni Rita (Museum committee members) and more IFRA-Nigeria and Museum staff sat together to present the exhibition, its topics, and the importance of presenting alternative objects to the public. They also highlighted the work of digitisation included in this project, which will make the collections more accessible to all in and outside Nigeria.

Unsung Group

Next, we heard speeches from the Museum Curator, IFRA-Nigeria director and some committee members before witnessing an invigorating dance and music show from White Diamond Production. Finally, it was time for the cutting of the ribbon and the unveiling of the exhibition. A committee member guided the attendees through the selected objects on the topics of architecture, religion, fertility, warfare and more.
