IFRA training workshops at OAU, Faculty of Arts

On 20 February 2020, IFRA’s team hosted two workshops at the Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University (Ile-Ife). The workshops were formally introduced by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor O.M.A. Daramola.

 

The workshop sessions were divided as below

First workshop: How to answer a call for paper? Choosing a title and writing an abstract"

Dr. Cyrielle Maingraud-Martinaud facilitated the morning workshop on "How to answer a call for paper? Choosing a title and writing an abstract". The workshop focused on how best to understand, analyse and respond to a call for paper for an academic conference.

Who facilitated?

Dr. Cyrielle Maingraud-Martinaud is the new deputy director of IFRA and her research focuses on the interactions between political systems and identity politics, focusing especially on religion. She has presented papers and conveyed panels in several international conferences, both in Europe and Africa.

What was is about?

Presenting a paper at an academic conference is a critical component of any academic career. It is especially important for PhD students so that they can publicise their research, present and discuss their findings and receive feedback and advice from their peers. To maximise the chances to be selected to present a paper at a conference, it is necessary to understand the criteria the conveyors use to evaluate the submissions.

The workshop was divided into two parts. In the first part of the workshop, Dr. Cyrielle Maingraud-Martinaud explained the different steps to take in analysing and responding to a call for paper. She used the example of a paper she recently submitted for a conference in Nigeria. In the last part of the workshop, the participants had the option to share their own experiences, difficulties and successes in submitting a paper to previous conferences.

 

Second workshop: writing workshop on “How to publish an article in a peer-review journal”

For this second workshop, Prof Marc-Antoine Pérouse de Montclos (IRD, France) gave some tips on how to publish a scientific article in an international peer-review journal. After, the theoretical explanations, the publications of Dr Olusegun Titus’ latest article was discussed.  Dr Olusegun Titus presented his article « Popular Music, Urban Slums and Ghettos in Lagos City Spaces, Nigeria » which was then reviewed by Dr. Cyrielle Maingraud-Martinaud. This session was a great opportunity to learn about Dr.  Olusegun's work as well as getting familiarised with the process of writing an academic article.

Who presented?

Dr.  Olusegun Stephen Titus is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. He obtained a PhD degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His research focuses on Ecomusicology, Medical Musicology, Music and Urban Spaces, Peacebuilding, Migration and Trafficking, because musical narratives on water, air and land give better socio-cultural explanation on the environmental degradation and its effects on humans and offers the best way of speeding up awareness in the developing world. He is a Fellow, IFRA-Nigeria and Fellow, Ife Institute of Advance Studies.

 

Each workshop gathered about 30 young researchers, mainly PhD students as well as young scholars in social sciences and humanities. IFRA-Nigeria is very thankful for Professor O.M.A. Daramola and Dr. Olusegun Stephen Titus to arrange this event.
