Research seminar on “Electric hybridisation: Opportunities and challenges for the energetic transition in Ibadan, Nigeria” with Tamara Villarins
Date: Thursday 3rd of October, 2-4pm
Location: IFRA-Nigeria’s library, Institute of African Studies, UI
On Thursday 3rd of October, from 2 to 4pm, IFRA-Nigeria hosted a research seminar at IFRA-Nigeria’s library themed on “Electric hybridisation: opportunities and challenges of the energetic transition in Nigeria: a case study of Ibadan ‘big accounts’”.
Miss Tamara Villarins is a visiting researcher at IFRA-Nigeria and a master student from Sorbonne University Paris 1 in Geography. Tamara Villarins is conducting research for the project HYBRIDELEC, a study of the energetic transition in developing countries led between Sorbonne-Paris 1, ANR (the French National Agency for Research) and CNRS (the French National Centre for Scientific Research).
The Nigerian energy landscape is evolving quickly and in multiple directions. In fact, the development of renewable energies such as solar energy, wind turbines and biomass often goes along larger petrol and gas projects. The choice of energy used also differs significantly between big public actors (hospitals and universities) and private actors (large companies and factories). Such big actors, the so-called “key accounts” are faced with similar challenges: How to ensure a sufficient electricity supply? What does the energetic transition imply in terms of sustainable development?
She presented the first findings of her 3-months field research in Ibadan, at the occasion of this seminar. After a short presentation showcasing the electricity challenges for key accounts in Ibadan, there was opportunity for fellows interested in that topic to discuss her findings and analysis, as well as to give her some constructive feedbacks for her project.
About 15 IFRA research fellows participated in the session and engaged in some critical debates about the future of energy provision for Ibadan and Nigeria at large.
