Red Dust: Recovering the History of Leprosy Control in Nigeria and Ireland

In the framework of the IAS/IFRA-Nigeria Distinguished Personality Lecture Series, we receive Dr. John Manton from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) who will deliver a lecture entitled: “Red Dust: Recovering the History of Leprosy Control in Nigeria and Ireland”. The lecture will focus more particularly on the experimentation of clofazimine in Ireland and south-eastern Nigeria in the 1950s and the 1960s.

Dr. John Manton is a research fellow and a member of the Martin Okonji Research Group of the LSHTM working on the Anthropologies of African Biosciences. His research focuses on a set of historical ethnographies of expertise in African medical research, public health, nutrition and development. He is currently doing field work in Nigeria as an IFRA scholar in residence.
