Training and field research grants on 'Digitising Religious Architectural Heritage in Ibadan'

unnamedAs part of both its programmes on Digital Humanities and on Nigerian religious dynamics, IFRA-Nigeria has launched a research project on the religious architectural heritage of Ibadan. Drawing from the fields of Digital Humanities, Architecture and the Socio-anthropology of religion, the objective is to map out, research and analyse the rich history and diverse aesthetics of all religious buildings in the capital of Oyo State. A kick-start workshop gathering academics and professionals with a specific interest in the project took place in October in order to sum-up the existing research and literature on the topic and map out key future topics of research and engagement.

The objective of the second phase of the project is to map out architecturally remarkable religious buildings in various areas of Ibadan and collect basic data information that will be included in an interactive online map. To conduct this second phase, IFRA-Nigeria is looking for several field researchers who will be tasked to conduct this survey of religious building in Ibadan. They will be trained in GIS technology and will work in pairs to collect information about religious building in the city in designated areas. They will be compensated for their work depending on their level of qualification.

Selected applicants will be trained in GIS technology during the week of the 20th of February. The fieldwork is scheduled to take place between 1st of March and 1st of May 2023 and might be extended if necessary. The survey will be conducted on a full-time basis so selected applicants will need to reside in Ibadan for the duration of the fieldwork.

Required qualifications:

  • Being a student or having completed a university degree pertaining to social and/or human sciences.
  • Having fieldwork experience.
  • Being familiar with the city of Ibadan.
  • Being proficient in Yoruba.

Applicants must submit:

  • A CV
  • A short cover letter (1 page and a half max.) presenting their academic background, skills and interest in working for this specific research program.

Please submit your application to no later than Wednesday 15 February 2023 midnight (WAT)
