I am a historian specializing in Modern History and Gender Studies. My work to date has focused on the renewal of gender history and history of feminisms through the study of mobilisations, feminist movements and feminist activists’ life stories in West Africa, with a particular focus on Nigeria. My Ph.D., entitled Nigeria Marches On. Feminist and Women’s Movements in the National Struggle for Socio-Political Rights (1944-1994), examined the trajectories of eleven feminist movements in Nigeria over half a century of socio-political action. It proposed an alternative point of view on the political history of the country, revisiting a mainstream male-centric political history, and offering an original history of women’s mobilisations and feminisms, that goes beyond a western-centric dominant historiography.

My current research focus is on the history of suffrage in Anglophone West Africa in the 20th century. At the intersection of African history, global history, gender studies and historical sociology of the vote, this research would provide an in-depth study of universal suffrage in English-speaking West Africa (Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria) over sixty years (1920-1970) to be conducted using a comparative and transnational approach.

I am one of the coordinators of the NaijaArchives Project.
