Workshop : Training of Lagos museum staff in digitisation techniques
IFRA-Nigeria, in the context of an FSPI (Fond de Solidarité pour les Projets Innovants) project funded by the French ministry of Foreign Affairs, collaborates with the archives and library unit of the National Museum Onikan Lagos to train the museum staff to digitisation techniques which are essential to preserve the museum’s archives and make them freely available online for everyone to consult and study.
To train the museum staff to digitise archival materials and transfer the documents of the archives and library unit of the National Museum online a training on the digitisation of archival collections for the staff of library and archives unit Onikan, Lagos was held from the 14th to the 16th February 2023.
Digitalisation capacity training activities commenced on the 14th of February 2023. The unit head Mr Taye Pedro conducted a tour of the Archives and Library unit presenting its history. The unit was established in 1959, two years after the establishment of the main Museum. It was established by Kenneth Crosswaithe Murray, an archaeologist, to serve as a place to keep important and rare document such as books, periodicals, journals, and archival collections like field notes, correspondence between K.C Murray and maps just to mention a few. All these collections should be digitised for the purpose of preservation, conservation and global accessibility.
12 professional officers of the National Museum were selected by the museum management to participate in the training /workshop. These participants are the ones that will be charged of conducting the digitisation of the records held at the Museum Library and Archives. The training was carried out by archivist from IFRA Mr Sola Babalola supported by Archivist and Staff of the museum Mr Taye Pedro, Mr Ojei Leonard and Mrs Precious Ayodele. The opening address was given by the Curator Mrs. Adeboye of the activities to embark upon. A goodwill message was given by Dr. Barbara Morovich Director with IFRA-Nigeria and Dr Cyrielle Maingraud-Martinaud gave explanation of what FSPI project were about with brief description of each tier of the project.
