Call for applications - Adesfa Natural Language Processing Boot Camp

Initiating the Natural Language Processing Programme in Nigeria :  8-11 November, 2021.

The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, University of Ibadan, in conjunction with the Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA), hereby invites postgraduate students and other members of the Nigerian society to a Boot Camp where it introduces the University’s proposal of the Natural Language Processing NLP Programme.

The Boot Camp will engage resource persons from the Paris Nanterre University France, Langues et Cultures d'Afrique Noire (LLACAN- CNRS) France, the University of Ibadan and the Nigerian private sector to speak to the conceptualization, scope and relevance of the Natural Language Processing project. In particular, it will familiarize its audience with the basic knowledge and skills in the following areas of industrial, professional and societal needs which constitute the nucleus of the University of Ibadan proposed Postgraduate Diploma in NLP, a key sequential follow-up to and outcome of the Boot Camp:

1. Conversion of indigenous language contents into digital formats
2. Design and development of software for indigenous language numeracy

• Deployment of linguistic concepts, theories and methods for language technologisation

1. Conduction of web and social media analytics
2. Design and development of natural language processing systems
3. Deployment of statistical analyses in conducting research in natural languages

The Boot Camp will provide an avenue not only for the delivery of knowledge on these competences but also for a robust interaction between academic theorization and industrial application, and how the two poles could forge formidable interventions in the academic, professional and economic horizons capable of expanding research, value and commercial frontiers of indigenous languages and English in Nigeria.        

Target Participants

Target participants are postgraduate students and early-career academics who have a profile and/or an interest in NLP. All participants will be required to come with their laptops. Participation will attract certificates of attendance.

Location

The Boot Camp will take place at the Senate Chamber, University of Ibadan

Application

Each applicant is requested to submit a short application which will state their interest including their motivation to participate in the Boot Camp and a detailed CV which will clearly show an interest in NLP.

Expenses

Costs of participation, except accommodation, for successful applicants will be covered by the ADESFA project organizers.
