This workshop offers a comprehensive exploration of the various facets of migration, taking the ‘encounter’ as its central theme. In empirical research, the encounter (with an interviewee, a living environment, a specific situation, etc.) plays a central role in the conduct of the research. The aim of this workshop is to reflect on the specific characteristics of such encounters in the study of migration. Methodological, ethical and theoretical aspects will be addressed. One of the aims of this workshop is also to explore migration and its consequences beyond the individuals who are on the move. This involves considering the various dimensions of migration and the worlds it creates. To this end, workshop participants will be invited to conduct field research aimed at exploring these different dimensions, whether by tracing migration journeys or exploring the imaginaries associated with migration.

The workshop is structured around three types of sessions, enabling participants to explore the various dimensions of empirical research on migration: lectures given by academics who have been working on migration-related topics for years; collective fieldwork sessions; and sessions dedicated to the presentation and discussion of research projects currently being carried out by the workshop participants.

This workshop therefore aims to train students in methodological issues, drawing not only on theoretical and reflective presentations but also through practical fieldwork practices. Furthermore, the workshop is a forum for discussion on the ongoing work of the various participants. It will provide training in the tools used in migration research, whilst enabling each participant to make progress with their own individual research.

The selected applicants will be required to read papers in order to prepare each lecture.

Criteria of eligibility:

  • Being a student in Social Science and Humanities. Preference will be given to students who use ethnographic methods in their research in Geography, Anthropology or Sociology.
  • Ongoing second year of Master degree or PhD.
  • Commit to attending all five days of the workshop. Attendance at each session is compulsory.
  • Students from the University of Ibadan will be given priority, as the costs of travel and accommodation cannot be covered.
