JOB Vacancy: 4 positions of Junior Researcher in Linguistics. IFRA-Nigeria - 2017
Job Description: Contribute to the production and annotation of a 600,000 word corpus in Nigerian Pidgin (NaijaSynCor)
Location: Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria
IFRA Nigeria is recruting 4 junior researchers in Linguistic for its new research programme about Nigerian Pidgin, NaijaSynCor, in its UI office, 33 Amina Way, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria
The project called NaijaSynCor [A Corpus-based Macro-Syntactic Study of Naija (Nigerian Pidgin)] takes an exhaustive and in-depth look at the structure of Naija (Nigerian Pidgin) in Nigeria today. It examines diachronic, diatopic, diaphasic, diastratic, and genre variation. Through the creation of a deeply 600 Kw annotated corpus, the project documents the emergence of Naija as a language at the 2 national level, challenging existing theories of the development of creoles and languages in contact. Capitalizing on the latest developments in the area of corpus annotation, this innovative approach to the dynamics of contact and change in the areas of human behaviour and sociology of language will powerfully impact the methodology and technology of research on emerging languages
The JRs will work on a full-time basis (5 days a week). Their work will consist in recording audio samples of NP in various locations in the country, transcribing and translating them into Standard English, and finally annotating them for further treatment using the tools of Natural Language Processing. This will follow a protocol and use dedicated computer applications (e.g. ELAN, etc.) which the applicants will be expected to learn during the initial 2 weeks’ training and evaluation period.
This is a full-time fixed term contract for 12 months in the first instance, with a possibility of renewal for an additional 6 to 12 months to complete the full annotation of the NaijaSynCor corpus.
The application deadline is 31st of December 2016.
